Foundations Learning System (For Schools)

The Foundations Learning System is an assessment/instruction solution designed for developing students
and those who struggle with reading comprehension and fluency due to poor word recognition skills.
The Foundations System is designed for students in grades 2 and above and has been proven effective for persistently struggling readers, special needs students, English language learners, and students who
learn differently.

The Foundations Learning System has 5 components (for schools):

  1. Screening Assessment
  2. Diagnostic Assessment
  3. Personalized Instruction and Interim Assessment
  4. Curriculum Guides and Lesson Plans
  5. Management System for Reports and Teacher Guides
Foundations Screener

Quick Screening to Identify Students Who Likely Have Deficits in Basic Reading Skills

Foundations in Learning’s online Screener offers a quick, easy-to-use way to determine which students are at risk in terms of basic reading skills. Derived from the Foundations Diagnostic, the Screener reliably predicts performance on several standardized reading measures. The Screener will tell you if the student is likely:

  • Proficient
  • At Some Risk
  • At High Risk

The Screener is available to schools at no charge and the typical student will complete it in about 20 minutes. If you are interested in enrolling students in the Screener please contact us.

Foundations Diagnostic

Outcomes and Use

Foundations Diagnostic analyzes what students know about the sound-symbol system (decoding) and whether they can automatically and flexibly use what they know across many contexts. The individual student profile identifies deficits in decoding skills with a specificity not seen in other assessments. Furthermore, Foundations Diagnostic is the first and only operationalized and validated measurement tool for automaticity of word recognition, an essential precursor to fluency and comprehension.

Specifically, Foundations Diagnostic will tell you:

  • How many and which students are proficient or at risk in decoding and/or automaticity skills.
  • What specific gaps exist in decoding knowledge.
  • If a student can generalize decoding to novel words and to multi-syllabic words.
  • Whether the student has skills to support automatic word recognition.
  • The instructional priorities for an individual student, as well as those common to a group of students.

The results can be used to identify those students who are proficient, have some risk or have high risk in decoding and/or automaticity skills. A student detail report provides a profile for each student, showing performance in decoding, generalization and automaticity skills, which can be used to pinpoint deficits in specific areas and aid in the selection of targeted interventions for individual or groups of students.

Foundations Diagnostic consists of a student component, a reporting tool, and a teacher management system. Students are enrolled in the assessment and typically complete it three 20-minute sessions.

Validity and reliability testing were conducted with 564 middle school students across two waves of testing and strong correlations were found between Foundations Diagnostic and standardized measures of decoding, fluency and comprehension. Validity testing of elementary students was conducted with 600 students, distributed across second, third and fourth graders. Strong correlations were found between the Foundations Diagnostic and standardized measures of reading fluency and comprehension.

Instruction and Curriculum Tools
The Foundations Learning System addresses core reading skills via an engaging online platform.

Students use the Foundations Learning System at least 20 minutes a day, four or five days a week, and typically complete the curriculum in five to six months. Depending on student learning needs, teachers deliver supplementary lessons two to five times a week using materials provided by the Foundations Learning System. These supplemental lessons align with what the students are learning on the Foundations Learning System and are designed to deepen learning and ensure success. Not only is the Foundations Learning System easy for teachers to implement in their classrooms, it includes a teacher dashboard where they can monitor student progress. Teachers can also opt to receive regular updates via email. It is an easy-to-use, personalized learning tool for both students and teachers. See for yourself.

Research Driven

Based on research and rooted in learning theory, the Foundations Learning System’s curriculum uses the Varied Practice Model, an approach that has proven successful in a variety of learning domains.

Foundations Learning System™ & Response to Intervention (RTI)

RTI is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavioral needs.

The Foundations Learning System™ is primarily a Tier 2 in the RTI approach. Tier 2 is targeted instruction in small groups with additional instruction.
